On dry land, Tate moves a little clumsily, as if her shoes were a couple of sizes too big or she just got off the Tilt-A-Whirl. But strap her into a pair of snowboard boots and send her down the mountain or slap her into a kayak and send her down the river, and her movements become pure grace – fluid, natural, Baryshnikovic. This might be because she’s spent almost as much time on snow (she grew up in Mount Shasta) and on water (her mom was a guide for us) as she has on pavement (or it might be because she is clumsy).
